Brownhill is an activist, artist, editor, teacher and writer. Her research focuses on social movements, decolonizing ecofeminisms and the
political ecologies of food and energy commons in local and global contexts. She is a Senior Editor of the journal Capitalism Nature Socialism anda lecturer at Athabasca University, teaching courses in Sociology and Communications Studies.
Leigh published Land, Food, Freedom (Africa World Press) in 2009 and Food Security, Gender and Resilience (Earthscan/Routledge) in February 2016. With Capitalism Nature Socialism's ecofeminist editorial collective, she is preparing a Special Issue of the journal under the title "Power, Peace and Protest: Ecofeminist Action, Vision and Alternatives." The issue will be released on International Women's Day in March 2018.
